Phentermine Is Safe, Beware of Herbal Substitutes
In 1997, the diet drug combination of fenfluramine and phenteramine, which was more popularly known as fen-phen, was withdrawn from the market. The drug combination was very effective for weight loss, but did cause serious side effects. At that time many companies tried to capitalize on Fen-Phen's popularity and began producing herbal varieties called "Phen-Fen" that they claimed was the same as the blacklisted Fen-Phen.
The herbal look alike supplement that is called "Phen-Fen" is much easier to obtain than the actual fen-phen ever was. Fen-phen required a doctor's visit and prescription but this new product is labeled a "dietary supplement," and is available without prescription in drugstores, in health food stores and through certain diet-program companies. It low price makes it very attractive to many.
The prescription combination was a mixture of fenfluramine, the portion that was proven to be connected to serious side effects and phenteramine. Fenfluramine raised the level of the chemical serotonin in the brain making the consumer feel full and eat less. Phenteramine increases the metabolic rate so that the person can easily burn more calories without extra physical effort.
The companies producing this herbal substitute claim that it is a duplication of the prescription fen-phen. According to Consumer Reports, however, Herbal Phen-Fen consists of "...extracts of Saint-John's-wort, a mood-boosting herb, and ma huang, a stimulant also known as ephedra."
The ephedra in Herbal Phen-Fen provides up to 60 mg of ephedrine alkaloid a day far exceeding the FDA's recommended limit of 24 mg per day for no longer than one week. There have been documented deaths associated with products that contain ephedrine alkaloids. The FDA has been investgating these deaths and while the reports are not yet conclusive, there recommendation of limiting ephedrine alkaloids stands as a safe precautionary measure.
The possible risks involved in taking Herbal Phen-Fen may far outweigh the benefit. Phentermine has found to be safe and is approved by the FDA as an effective means of reducing life endangering obesity.
